Contract dispute leaves Brian Burns' status uncertain for Panthers' opener
The Carolina Panthers' offseason and training camp were once filled with confidence and optimism, however, the team is in the midst of an unexpected contract extension crisis as they approach the season opener.
A series of questions have been raised about the contract of edge rusher Brian Burns. Burns and the team appear to have not yet agreed on an extension, raising questions about whether he will stick around for the upcoming season until he gets a new contract.
Panthers head coach Frank Reich told reporters on Monday that he is uncertain about whether Burns will play for a new contract. Reich also admitted that he was not involved in Burns' contract negotiations, but that he expects Burns to play this upcoming weekend against the Atlanta Falcons.
However, Burns declined to comment when asked about his contract on Monday. Meanwhile, when asked if he thought Burns wouldn't play without a new contract, Reich couldn't give a definitive answer.
Burns' contract issue is relatively straightforward: he's entering the final year of his rookie contract, which is in its fifth year, and he's hoping to secure a long-term guaranteed contract that matches the high level of production he's shown over the past four seasons, which includes 38 tackles, 196 tackles for loss and seven forced fumbles. However, this contract controversy didn't surface until recently, with Burns even missing the team's practice last Thursday.
In contrast, Burns has been fully engaged in recent practices, earning the respect of team veteran Justin Houston, who has been through a contract dispute of his own.
Burns initially took a more muted approach to the contract issue, telling reporters he wouldn't miss games because of money issues.
He said last week, via ESPN, "Those who don't attend games won't be seen as wrong. But we have a special team and I'm a key part of it, so I can't sit out. I have to be here."
However, things seem to have changed a bit in recent days. With Burns declining to comment on the issue, reporters have had to get a sense of the changing locker room atmosphere in other ways. Longtime Panthers defensive back Shaq Thompson didn't have much to say on the subject, but he did acknowledge that as a key player in the Carolina Panthers' future, Burns deserves to be treated appropriately.
Said Thompson: "I really don't like to talk much about other players. But everybody knows, both inside the team and outside the audience, everybody knows exactly what Burns deserves and he deserves to be paid appropriately. Everybody knows what should be done to make sure this is resolved before the new season opens."
However, it's looking more and more difficult for the Panthers to reach a contractual agreement with Burns to bring him back to the team before the new season opens. There are only six days until the Carolina Panthers' next game, so time is very limited unless the two sides have made sufficient progress on a contract extension.
Overall, the emergence of this contract dispute was an unexpected issue for the team and coincides with the start of an important new season, adding additional uncertainty to the team. However, despite this issue, Reich still holds Burns in high regard for his performance and says his respect and admiration for him remains undiminished.
