Ballon d'Or 2023: Messi Achieves 'Dream' of World Cup Win, Claims Eighth Award

International Miami and Argentina striker Lionel Messi won his eighth Ballon d'Or at the 2023 Ballon d'Or ceremony in Paris. Addressing the audience, he said winning the 2022 World Cup in Qatar was a major achievement for him and reflected on his future, saying, "As long as I'm fit and able to compete, I will continue to play."

Messi looked ahead to the rest of his career after his eighth award at the Ballon d'Or ceremony and said he had already achieved "my dream" in 2022.

Messi failed to reach the heights he did at Barcelona at Paris Saint-Germain but reinvigorated Argentina at last year's World Cup in Qatar. In what could be his final World Cup appearance, Messi was one of the tournament's best performers and led his national team to a famous penalty shootout victory over France in Qatar.

After receiving the award, he said on stage: "I am happy to be here again and to enjoy this moment again. It was a dream come true to win the World Cup and I want to share this honor with all those involved."

When asked if the award was special, he replied, "All of these awards are special, the most special being the team award. It's always special to be recognized."

"I never thought I would have a career like this and accomplish so much. To have the success, to have the wealth that I have. The best team in the world, the best team in history, made it easier for me to win Serie A and win these individual awards. Winning the Copa America and then winning the World Cup after so many tough moments with the national team."

Messi, who is enjoying an offseason after the international Miami MLS season, spoke about his time in the United States.

He continued, "I'm happy to be in International Miami and to find myself in the state I'm in. I'm enjoying different moments in my life with my family."

It's fantastic to be a world champion. I feel very calm now with this award. To be able to have a career like this and enjoy soccer as much as I do.

On his future, he added: "I don't know how much longer I can keep going but I tend to enjoy it. I've been saying recently that I want to keep enjoying it. I don't know [how long I'll play], as long as I'm fit and able to compete I'll keep playing."

"I can't judge anything because soccer changes every day. I hope it lasts a long time because it's what I know and love to do. So, I hope to keep going."
